I met a girl tomorrow
whose smile reached back to today.
She said, “I’ll always love you,”
In her simple trusting way.
I promised faithfulness forever,
but then began to cry.
Because forever means the past,
and for that I told a lie.
I remembered all the others
who I’d thought and told the same.
And I wished that I’d been patient
instead of playing at that game.
So when we meet tomorrow,
I mean everything I say.
I love you but I’m sorry,
I’ve said it all today.
