Infatuation vs. Love

Kristy Smith’s notes from a Focus on the Family broadcast with Dawson McAllister entitled “How to Know You’re in Love”

Infatuation Love
X Based on little-known facts about the other person <3 Knows and accepts the other person as he or she is
X Won’t pass the test of time <3 Time is its greatest friend
X Is purely an emotion, thus is subject to change and wavering <3 An emotional need and an act of the will
X Is blind to reality <3 Is not blind, but seeks the truth
(The following comparisons are based on 1 Corinthians 13)
X In a big hurry <3 Patient
X Wants to change the other person <3 Knows and accepts them
X Easily threatened, jealous <3 Trusts God, allows the other person to be free
X Self-centered (“What will benefit ME?”) <3 Does not seek its own (“How can I serve others?”)

Some questions to ask when considering character qualities in a potential life partner:

(I know that there can be an almost exhaustive list in this area, but these are some mentioned by Mr. McAllister.)

  • What happens when this person is disappointed?
  • What happens when he is cross?
  • What happens when he doesn’t get his way?
  • Where does he stand with Jesus Christ?
  • What are his communication skills like?

“Selfishness is the opposite of love.”
