Step By Step

I made my plans with carefulness,
then waited for the day
When I could carry out those plans;
it seemed not far away.

But One whose ways are higher,
than plans of mine can be,
Just overruled those plans of mine;
and closed the doors for me.

I couldn’t understand it,
my heart cried out, “But why?”
He said, “Just simply follow Me;
and do not ask questions why.”

I followed where He led me,
e’en though I could not see.
And then I saw and understood;
God’s way was best for me.

And now a single step I take –
beyond I cannot see.
But I can rest serene,
because I know God’s leading me!
