The Bride and the Groom

My favorite part of going to a wedding isn’t seeing the bride’s dress or hearing the music or the cake — it’s the look on the groom’s face as his bride walks up the aisle. I still remember the first wedding when that became my favorite part. It was my pastor’s son’s wedding. As his bride drew near up the aisle, his face was mixed with deep love, deep longing, and deep emotion. It was as if his face said, “Here you are, after all these years. You’re mine. And you are so beautiful.”

Someday my prince will come…

I know there is a deep question coming when her eyes get that far away look. It may be an expression, but you truly can just about see the wheels turning in her little mind. Then slowly…slowly…her head turns toward me and her thoughtful look focuses on me for a moment before she speaks. Then it comes:

“Mummy, I’m very worried, because I don’t know how to get married. I know I’m growing into a lady and it is almost time for me to get married, but I don’t know how…”

Vows: Always

Recently, I attended a memorial of a dear old man from church. It was a joyful memorial, full of good memories and celebration. I watched his spunky, ageless wife in the front row, head bobbing up and down in agreement with the message. I was awed by her faithfulness to her husband through the years! These last few years, he had dementia and wasn’t really “himself” — but she still took care of him and loved him. What a testimony!

It brought to mind the words from our vows, “…to love and to cherish you always…”

Not when you say “I do”

For us, thus far, this month has been full of weddings. In the past two weekends, we’ve had as many weddings, and while the two weddings couldn’t have been more different from each other, they’ve been filling my mind with thoughts of weddings and marriage and honeymoons and other such lovely things. And very early this morning, when I was up nursing my little guy, I randomly started thinking of the wedding cards that we gave these two couples.

Fathers and Daughters

Dads will always fail you. I love my dad, and he’s my hero, but he is no more perfect than I am. The Lord never fails though, and the acceptance and identity that come through Him can never be taken away. If you haven’t had a good experience with your dad, seeing the Lord as a Father is a difficult thing to do, but I challenge you – good or bad dad experience – to ask the Lord to be a Father to you, to show you what a perfect Father looks like.

Vows: Faithfulness

Christian marriage is not about hearts and roses. It is, however, about a Divinely arranged union that has the potential to show the world God’s faithful love for His people. That is such a high calling with great potential! We can scream to the world about how God loves them as loud as we want, but really, the more effective route is to show them what this love looks like in an everyday setting.

Absence Makes the Heart Grow: Without Touching

The simple lack of her is more to me than others’ presence. -Edward Thomas From Gretchen B.: My husband of nearly ten months and I were separated by about 700 miles during our courtship and engagement.  Our relationship was different from some because we knew each other growing up and his family still goes to…
