I do not know who,
In years that are yet to come,
May look upon my life
When theirs has just begun
And see the moments I have lived,
See the path that I have gone,
And mold their footsteps after mine
And follow the sketch of life I’ve drawn.
I do not know but that my life
Might be a type of lesson book
Which, someone, somewhere, sometime,
May open wonderingly, and look.
So let me live my life today,
Faithfully pure, true and good
That when my life is past,
And another in this place has stood
When one looks upon this life
They will not in portrait just see me
But in this life, Christ at work,
And this heart from wandering finally free.
So that they, in following my steps,
Will follow His steps, not really mine,
And paint their one life portrait
To just reflect alone, His heart divine.
That in the end, they and I
May life’s journey over meet,
And may our portraits always
Be a witness to saving grace
And to the One who changes hearts like mine.
