The Iraq Journey

And then… he came home.

Military wives know there are times we can feel so very alone, whether or not our husbands are deployed. Since it is always helpful to me to talk with or read about other women who “get it”, we put all the deployment-related posts from my blog during the time John was gone, here, in one spot. Feel free to peruse as you wish.

What I’d Like For You To Know–Wife of a Deployed Soldier (my guest post at Rocks In My Dryer)

Being that we know there are several of you here at YLCF with military husbands or family members, the Team and I would love to know who you are. I’d be thrilled if you would leave a comment here, telling us a little about yourself and your Country-serving family member.

I’ll start: I’m Ashleigh, wife of a United States Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant. We’ve been married for five-and-a-half years and have two little boys, ages 2 and 3. We’ve made it through two duty stations, four houses, one deployment and are gearing up for the next one in a few months. We love the commissary, dislike barracks duty, love long weekends and hate separation!

Now it’s your turn. Tell us your story.

Wow, that is a tear-jerker, Ashleigh! I can’t imagine how hard it was for you while your husband was gone, especially with two little ones at home… But praise God that he is now safely back with you!

The song “I’m already there” – I’ve loved that song, but never heard it in such a fitting way.

    God bless your family.

Every time I hear this song– or see this little slideshow, I end up crying. Just like I did the first time I heard it… the first time I heard of the coming deployment, the day you told about the “good bye’…and the first time I saw Bethany’s pictures of John’s homecoming. Ack. :)

    Love you bunches…

My name is Christine and I’m married to Daniel, an Air Force Pilot. We’ve been living our ‘happily ever after’ for 2 1/2 years and have a 1 year old boy who is the perfect mix of both of us. About a week from now, we’ll be on our way to our 3rd duty station where deployments will soon be inevitable as the plane he’s training for deploys a lot. Military life is one of extremes….extremely adventurous & fun things, along with extremely difficult things. Each day we are assured that God is in control of everything and I am learning to bloom wherever we are planted.

We’ll be praying for your upcoming deployment, Ashleigh!

Well, I am not married to a military man, nor am I ready to be, but I *am* the daughter of an enlisted airman in the US Air Force. He has been in the service for 23 years. As a family, he, my mother, my brother, and I have lived at seven different bases, soon to be eight come April of 2010. He is currently serving a year-long overseas deployment in South Korea, where he has been since February of 2009. He will be coming home in December for a few shorts weeks of holiday with our family, and then will return until March of 2010.

It’s never been an easy lifestyle, but I will never be one to deny that it has brought our life some very interesting adventures, including a two-year assignment in Germany. We have been blessed to meet some amazing people, regardless of the constant flow of ‘hellos’ and ‘goodbyes’.

I am SO very proud of my father for all that he does. He is a wonderful example for the younger men on his squadron, and for my brother and I.

I’ll be praying for this upcoming deployment, and that God will continue to provide for your family as He has in the years gone past. :)

Hi, I’m Laura from Ohio. Courting a brave and godly Army Captain named Grant. :) He was in Iraq from Sept. ‘08 through August ‘09 and is now stationed back at Ft. Carson in CO. Our whole relationship has been long distance– which definitely has its challenges!! Yet it’s been beautiful to learn so much about each others’ hearts through letters and phone calls as well as the in-person visits.
It’s difficult to plan ahead with the Army as I’ve learned, but it helps me to rely on the Lord and give Him control. I’m learning to ‘be small’ and treasure the moment of each day despite uncertainties in the future.

I saw this video on your blog “Heart and Home” a few weeks back. I was so moved that I went and donated items for care packages that will be sent via the VFW. I will definitely be doing this a lot more.

    God bless you.

Oh, that song is such a tearjerker by itself…with the video it was too much for my mascara to handle! :-) Thank you for your family’s sacrifice of having your husband/ your children’s daddy away fighting so that I (along with every other American- whether they would like to acknowledge it or not) can still have my freedom! May God richly bless you all!

Hi, my name is Abby Dobson. I married my Army Sgt., Nathan, on November 14 of this year and have moved with him to Ft. Hood Texas which is where he will be stationed until he deploys in summer of 2010. I have never experienced military life before, so this is a big learning experience for me. I will admit that I am already dreading the thought of him leaving sometime next year. I cannot tell you how much I appreciated reading all your posts concerning deployment and being married to a service man, Ashleigh! They were so timely for me and I cried my way through them. I know I will re-read them often in the days ahead. If you ever have any suggestions as to how to best adjust to this lifestyle, I would be grateful to hear them. Already I am definitely learning to cling to God with a new fervency, as so much is unknown right now.

Oh, did I mention that I am VERY happily married and extremely proud of my man?! :)

God bless you and yours. Thank you so much for sharing your heart!
