A purchased starter may be more successful, because you don't know what strains of wild yeast live in your house---maybe they are very vigorous beasties, or maybe you don't have much wild yeast in the air. I would not reccomend feeding a starter whole wheat flour, only white flour, but you can experiment to find out what works best for you.
Ruth Wiechmann

I love making bread and I love the idea of wild yeast. I found this http://www.thefreshloaf.com/node/233 which I would like to try, though I don't know if it will work with whole wheat. Are purchased sourdough starters more hearty? Do they work better with 100% whole wheat flour?

Yay! Nourishing Traditions! My family loves that book, and it was the main one I requested before I get married in May. My sister experimented with sourdough bread for awhile, but we all got tired of carving those "cinder blocks." :D As you said, it was probably the fact that we used all whole wheat. (Didn't Sally Fallon tell you not to use white flour? For shame!) =D

Thanks for the post!
