These Days…

I had to smile when I considered my post for today. What with Natalie off to Alaska soon and Jeannie having a book published… it makes my summer seen rather tame! :)

Of course, in many ways, I haven’t had much choice in the matter. And we’ve had a marvelous vacation and an anniversary and loved ones coming and going. We had my dear friend from France here for a couple of weeks with her two children–you have never heard anything as adorable as her three year-old’s prattling mixture of French and English. Each morning I would take him down with me to feed the chickens and he’d pelt them with grain, shouting gleefully, “Mange, poulet! Mange!” (And, incidentally, a three year-old little Frenchman is an excellent person to practice one’s French on–not so much of a stickler about pronunciation and proper tenses and such… ;) When I said, “Les poulet sont sur le maison de poulet,” he looked at me quite comprehendingly and matter-of-factly, nodding his head in complete agreement.)

Puttering happily in the garden, (we’ve got tomatoes coming out of our ears!!) reading Victorian novels, scribbling madly, loving on all the dear folk God sends my way this summer–such has been these last languid weeks. And is there anything more refreshing to one’s spirit than devotions on a summer dawn?

Today I’m journeying about an hour south of Atlanta with a couple of friends to an adorable little book shop that is crammed to capacity with all the authors and titles I adore. This is the same shop that Natalie and I visited when she came to see me back in January. I could hardly carry all my treasures that day, and she had to re-pack her bags to accommodate hers! This morning I’m having to practice deep-breathing exercises just thinking about it: the dusty, bookish smell as you come in the door, the feel of heavy old volumes and glossy pages, the thrill of the hunt! I can already sense my wallet getting lighter!

Wish me luck! And have a wonderful day! :)

Hehehe…Lanier, your posts never cease to make me giggle. Enjoy your trip…if you’re ever in Milwaukee Wisconsin, make a trip to Renaissance Books…its in an old tenement building, and is FIVE stories of old books…it is just LOADED with treasures. I literally spent an entire day there and still didn’t look at all 5 floors stacks. :) Have tons of fun!

Sounds like a perfectly delightful (and exhilerating!) outing — have fun! Though, I’m sure you won’t have a problem doing so. :o )

When you get the chance, it would be neat to hear about the treasures you’ve found in this particular book shop.

Ahhh. The HUNT for old books. :)
We used to have two quaint old bookstores downtown; one was Ruth’s books, the other I don’t remember. They are both now gone, but I did love to spend an afternoon perusing. Once day I found both an old copy of Mother Carey’s Chickens (which I have read many times since) and a beautiful illustrated Old Fashioned girl by L. M. Alcott.

    Lovely!

I always wished my mother had taught us to speak and read French (she took four years of it at her girl’s preparatory high school).

So glad that some of you girls enjoyed Project Gutenberg…

Lanier, do you have the name and/or address of the little book shop? I will be in Fayetteville, GA next month and just might be able to squeeze in a trip!
