My grandpa’s philosophy of life

Well, no one can say I don’t come by my adventurous ways honestly. The photo is my grandpa (right) beside the plane he flies…I am looking forward to seeing them perform again in tomorrow in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, “Wow, what a Ride!” – Papa Charles Hutchins

Many people have the opportunity to travel to visit a museum but rarely does the museum come to visit you. Attending an airshow where Tora, Tora, Tora is performing is like having a 3-D Museum come to visit you.

“Tora, Tora, Tora” is the Commemorative Air Force’s recreation of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that signaled the beginning of the American involvement in World War II. Designed as a living history lesson, “Tora, Tora, Tora” is intended as a memorial to all the soldiers on both sides who gave their lives for their countries.”

Here is his plane.

That is awesome! So he gets to be Japanese? Is there a link or something that would give their show schedule?

John would agree with your Grandpa. :) He often jokes when we talk about healthy eating (which, in reality he does think is important!) that, “You can eat delicious food, enjoy it, and die of clogged arteries, or you can eat healthy your whole life, not enjoy good food, and die anyway.” That’s John for ya. ;)

Gotta say, I love your grandpa’s quote. A favorite quote of mine lately comes from Jack London: I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time. =)

    Natalie,

That’s pretty neat! Do you ever fly with your grandpa? I’ve always loved airplanes since I was a little girl (though I’ve lost some of the fascenation as I’ve gotten older- which really is too bad!) I really like that quote- life isn’t meant to be all tidy, but fully used to God’s glory!:-)

Silly me… yeah, it works. I looked at the pic of his plane, but didn’t click on that link. :) Too bad… no shows here in CA.

Your papa reminds me of Matthew…
“You’ve been working too hard today, Matthew,” she said reproachfully. “Why won’t you take things easier?”

“Well now, I can’t seem to,” said Matthew, as he opened the yard gate to let the cows through. “It’s only that I’m getting old, Anne, and keep forgetting it. Well, well, I’ve always worked pretty hard and I’d rather drop in harness.”

I had no idea a flight group like that existed! My sister will be thrilled to the edges of beyond. The picture in this post really caught my eye…I was like, “Why does YLCF have a pic of a WWII-era Zero on their main page???” Hehe…

Awesome!!! I’m a WW II history fan who had never heard about the Pearl Harbor recreation until now. I viewed the schedule, and “Tora, Tora, Tora’ was just 1 1/2 hours from my house last week! Hopefully, they will return next year.=)
