Lanier, I really appreciated this. I tend to give in to self pity on Valentine's day, but with God's help I'm going to enjoy it this year...and yes, dream of the future! God's timing is perfect -- I will trust Him and wait with expectation!

The unofficial tradition in our family is to make valentines for all the other 7 siblings, plus a couple for our parents. And what a delightful, sociable, creative mess it makes! :O)

One of my favorite valentine memories was when I was 9 and had a bad case of the chicken pox. My dad gave me a beautiful little heart-shaped treasure box that I still have.

Still, I am a girl with dreams, and that post meant a lot, Lanier. Thanks!

Sure, the world turns Valentine's Day into a mush of candy hearts and glitzy red cards, but it is such a beautiful, special day. Have you ever heard the true story of St. Valentine for whom the day is named? It is a precious story and a wonderful day for me...and watch out because the YLCF WILL be celebrating this year!!

I enjoyed your post so much, Lanier! It was so refreshing. Lately, I have been battling with the "Valentine's Day blues". Your post encouraged me not to mope around during this time of year. Although I'm not sure Valentine's Day will be enjoyable even when I am married (it is so secularized that it turns me off a bit), I'll certainly try to think of this day as a celebration of the love of friendship.

One of my friends was expressing similar ideas on her own blog recently. She wrote something along the following lines (paraphrasing):
What makes Valentine's Day so special? It is an arbitrarily-chosen day of the year. If we're single why should we feel less loved? If we're "together," why should we expect any more from this particular day? Love is love. It's nice to have indications of it, sure, but if a guy only gives you something because he's forced to, where's the fun in that? :)

She, too, suggested that we celebrate agape (not "agayp," but "ah-gah-pay" ;)) love just as much as eros. So I am making it "friend day," and I am mailing cards to all my girlfriends. :) Much more fun than sighing at the moon, eh? I think so!

What a great post!

Thank you for that, Lanier. I was touched by the fact that one single little flower or handwritten note leaves you overcome with joy. I never express the same love and gratefulness in my own life, and I now see how important it is. Thank you for that wonderful tea party idea for Valentine's Day. Here in England, we don't tend to celebrate loving friendship on Feb 14th - it's all about romantic love. But it doesn't have to be that way. Thank you for your lovely and inspiring post.

Naomi, 21, London

Lanier,
I am blessed by your words of encouragement. The Lord has shown me many things since the fall, and as I have just recently stepped away from a relationship, permanently, God is showing me His grace. You made a very good point of sharing our anxious hearts with the Lord. One of the coolest things that I have to look forward to is this Valentine's Day, because I get to spend it with the best Prince, Jesus Christ.
